Quite possibly the only “real” art I’ve been involved with… Uma cegueira branca (a white blindness) is an experimental photo shoot set made and arranged by my friend Mildred Barrios, inspired on José Saramago’s novel “ensaio sobre a cegueira” (Blindness).
It was very fun. I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing, and to my surprise, it was more like acting for a short horror story than posing. First part of the story deals with a young doctor and his descent into madness. He is constantly checking his pulse, his temperature, his bowel movements, blood pressure…
…suddenly his vision blur and fades into white, he freaks out, waking up on a mental institution. Alone, deaf and blindfolded after he tried to rip his eyes off, he slams on the padded walls and screams for help only to find himself voiceless. I spent an hour blindfolded in silence and Mildred made me spin until I was totally disoriented.
The thid “stage” is about medication for breakfast, finding a knife and breaking the fourth wall. This part was the best The doctor confronts his madness, his illness and his blindness with playful and wild acts of self violence. I was given guidelines and pretty much improvised here.
The last part, the doctor stands alone, clothing restored presumably cured, before a window. The purpose is to leave this session and story open ended…
(BTW, the title is a link to the whole set)
What do you think of it?
So, I was researching which celebrities other than Wesley Snipes and Ricky Martin (none of which I’m particularly fond of) practice Capoeira. Vincent Cassel is the only famous person outside fighting circles or martial-arts oriented films I know of, and Mark Dacascos doesn’t count, he just trained 2 months for a role in a movie…
On the other hand, I found that Christian Bale, Nicholas Cage and Jake Gylllenhaal practice Wing Chun (I knew Robert Downey Jr. did though)
do you know any other celebrities (outside pro fighting or martial arts movie circles) who practice a martial art?
